Confessions of a Nondualist in Troubled Times

While friends succumb to rage in this time of loss—of dominion over our bodies, of voting rights, of programs that feed, house and educate those who through racism or poverty have been denied equal opportunities, of programs that guarantee health care, of services and safety for LGBTQ communities, of safety for black, brown and immigrant communities, of programs that support the arts in our lives, to funding for important research on climate change, of trusted sources of news, of regulations that protect other species who cohabit our precious mother earth, and the loss of protection for mother earth herself—I do not.

I embrace a vision of infinite love, a divine order, trusting in the presence of the One power, and I know that I am not separate from that.

  • This does not mean I don’t march in protest, chant with my friends, carry a sign and a whistle to alert my community when ICE is afoot.
  • This does not mean I don’t follow trusted news sources, but I limit my dose of morning news to thirty minutes.
  • It does not mean I don’t donate to causes and candidates, as I am able.

I does mean I manage my intake of the news of loss after loss, and I balance that consumption with practice. For me, practice means movement, pranayama breathing, walks in nature, connection with beloved others, meditation and prayer.

Foremost is my morning practice, but I pause throughout my daily activities for long moments—anywhere from one to five minutes—of meditation and prayer.

No matter what my activity, my intention is service, not only to my own self-care, but to the lives of all.

In my heart, I carry the Unity-inspired affirmation:

Love only.

Forgive everything.

Remember who you are.

And then begin again.

What are you doing to balance the cultural and societal losses you may be feeling? I’d love to hear from you.
